Rocked Ecuador Earthquake 6.7 SR



Quito - An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale (SR) rocked the coastal region of Ecuador. The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, said there were no reports of damage as a result of this earthquake.

As reported by Reuters and AFP on Wednesday (05/18/2016), an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude rocked the same region with a magnitude 7.8 quake that killed more than 650 people in Ecuador, last month. The National Geological Institute recorded earthquake that rocked Ecuador at 2:57 pm local time, the 6.8 magnitude and was centered in the Manabi, Ecuador western region.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said, no tsunami threat as a result of this earthquake. USGS noted this latest quake centered at a depth of 32 kilometers from the sea level and situated in locations as far as 136 kilometers northwest of the capital, Quito.

"The epicenter is in Mompiche. There are no reports of damage. No tsunami warning," said President Rafael Correa through his Twitter account.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no danger of a tsunami caused by this earthquake.

Eyewitnesses told Reuters that the earthquake cut off electricity in some coastal areas and make people panic until running into the streets. Residents also said there were no reports of damage as a result of this latest earthquake.

The massive earthquake that shook Ecuador in April, was recorded as the worst earthquake in the country, in the last seven decades. The earthquake that leveled thousands of buildings and homes that exist along the west coast of Ecuador, are also undermining roads. Around 16,600 people were injured by the earthquake that triggered a loss of up to $ 2 billion.
