Colombo - More than 150 people are feared dead in Sri Lanka landslide buried. At least two landslides struck Sri Lanka after being hit by heavy rains over the last three days.
Rescuers struggled searching for survivors and finding bodies of those killed. The latest data of local authorities, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday (18/05/2016), the death toll has so far reached 35, after 19 more bodies were found on the embankment landslides.
Local military spokesman, Jayanath Jayaweera, said at least 13 bodies found in landslide site Aranayaka and three other bodies in the region Bulathkopitiya. More than 196 thousand residents were forced to evacuate from their homes, due to heavy rain. While more than 350 people were rescued by officers from the affected area of the landslide.
Until now, the search and rescue efforts focused on Aranayaka city, which is 100 kilometers from the capital city of Colombo. Reported three villages in the region Aranayaka landslide buried since Tuesday (17/5) evening local time.
One of the Sri Lanka Red Cross officials involved in Aranayaka emergency meeting, expressed concern about the government that the death toll will increase.
"In the meeting, disclosed that about 300-400 people were feared killed in a landslide in Aranayaka," said Director General of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Community, Neville Nanayakkara, told Reuters.
Nanayakkara statement was delivered before several other officials said, about 150 people were rescued from the landslide site in Aranayaka. Until now, the safety of some 150 other people believed buried by landslides, could not be ascertained.
The victims who were rescued were taken to at least six local refugee camps. Soldiers using boats and helicopters to rescue the victims in the Puttalam district.
